In this fast-paced digital world I find there is something quite special about the giving and receiving of a greetings card. A handwritten card allows us to connect on an emotional level. Sending a greetings card shows someone you are thinking of them and wishing them well.


Greetings cards are usually given to mark special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries and seasonal celebrations but they also convey messages of thanks or express feelings and sentiments. Many consider giving or receiving greetings cards as a significant part of celebrating and acknowledging an occasion or event.


Greetings cards date back to the ancient Chinese with the exchange of goodwill messages at New Year. The tradition of sending cards can also be traced back to the early Egyptian who used papyrus scrolls to send letters. In Europe in the 1400's designs were carved in woodcuts and printed onto paper as a way of sending handmade greetings. Since the 1860's companies have commercially been producing greetings cards. Bought about by improving technology and the introduction of a postal system. Today, there are cards available for every conceivable occasion. The average person worldwide sending over 50 cards each year. Here in the UK we bought over two billion greetings cards last year.
